Sherry Turkle speaks some truthful words in this well written lecture about communication technology, addiction and reclaiming conversation. Perhaps one of the most intelligent comment on contemporary communication issues in years.

I think when we're texting, on the phone, doing your e-mail, getting information, the experience is of being filled up. And that feels good. We assume that it is nourishing in the sense of taking us to a place we want to go. And I think that we are going to start to learn that in our enthusiasms and in our fascinations, we can also be flattened and depleted by what perhaps was once nourishing us, but which can't be a steady diet, because speaking for myself, if all I do is my e-mail, my calendar and my searches, ... I feel great; I feel like a master of the universe. And then it's the end of the day, I've been busy all day, and I haven't thought about anything hard, and I have been consumed by the technologies that were there and that had the power to nourish me.

The point is we're really at the very beginning of learning how to use this technology in the ways that are the most nourishing and sustaining. We're going to slowly find our balance, but I think it's going to take time, and I think the first discipline is to think of us in the early days so that we're not so quick to — (snaps fingers) — yes, no, on, off, good, good, and to just kind of take it slowly and not feel that we need to throw out the virtues of deliberateness, living in life, stillness, solitude.

There is a wonderful Freudian formulation, which is that loneliness is failed solitude. In many ways, we are forgetting the intellectual and emotional value of solitude. You're not lonely in solitude. You're only lonely if you forget how to use solitude to replenish yourself and to learn. And you don't want a generation that experiences solitude as loneliness. And that is something to be concerned about, because if kids feel that they need to be connected in order to be themselves, that's quite unhealthy. They'll always feel lonely, because the connections that they're forming are not going to give them what they seek.

I see part of my role in this conversation as giving nostalgia a good name. If something worked and was helpful to parents, teachers, children, that thing should be celebrated and brought forward, insofar as we can. It's not to say that technology is bad -- robots, cell phones, computers, the Web. The much harder work is figuring out what is their place. That turns out to be very complicated.
You can't put something in its place unless you really have a set of values that you're working from. Do we want children to have social skills, to be able to just look at each other face to face and negotiate and have a conversation and be comfortable in groups? Is this a value that we have in our educational system? Well, if so, a little less Net time, s'il vous plait. Technology challenges us to assert our human values, which means that first of all, we have to figure out what they are.

My Arae (μ Arae) ist ein gelb-orangefarbener, sonnenähnlicher Zwergstern der scheinbaren Helligkeit von 5,1 mag in der Nordostecke des Sternbilds Altar (Ara), wo er auch mit bloßem Auge erkennbar ist. Er ist in die Spektralklasse G und in die Leuchtkraftklasse V - IV einzuordnen. Der Stern ist etwa 50 Lichtjahre von unserer Sonne entfernt. Sein Durchmesser beträgt etwa das 1,4-fache, seine Masse etwa das 1,1-fache der Sonne; das entspricht ca. 360'000 Erdmassen. Aus dem Unterschied in der Helligkeit zwischen μ Arae und der Sonne lässt sich vermuten, dass der Stern bereits weiter entwickelt und auch älter ist als die 4,6 Milliarden Jahre der Sonne. I was so happy to design the booklet and to supervise the whole production at the

Man is not a pilgrim but a pilgrimage. And obviously there are problems, great problems. Problems don’t exist for animals and trees and rocks and rivers, problems exist only for man – because everything else is defined, everything is settled already by nature itself. Nature has left man unsettled; man has been left to his own efforts, his own endeavours. But these problems have to be understood not as problems, but as challenges not enemies, but as friends – because it is only through them that one learns, one knows, one becomes.

Because of this search, maps have to be devised, designs have to be devised. Because of this
search, you will need guidelines. Remember, a map is just a map, it is not the country that it
represents. The map of India is not India. No design is the truth. The design is just a design, but it can help tremendously. A map can help tremendously, knowing perfectly well that the map is not the country. The map does not even resemble the country – by seeing the map of India you will not be seeing anything of India. The map resembles nothing. The map is just a parallel device; it is a metaphor, a symbolic representation.

But it can be of great help. Those who have gone beyond can create designs for you – that’s the function of a Master. Those who have known, those who have arrived, those who have attained to their definition, those who are no longer just existential but who have become essences; those who have become souls, crystallised, centred, grounded; those who are – can give you a few guidelines, a few hints, a few maps. Sufis call them designs, and there exists a school of Sufis called ’the designers’ – NAQSHBANDI (The engravers of the Heart).

Selimiye Mosque - Mimar Sinan - Edirne

It is one of the most important Sufi schools. There are others. They are all called by names like this. Another school is called ’the weavers’, another school is called ’the boatmakers’. Sufis have such names. Those names are very practical – they immediately indicate what the school is doing. NAQSHBANDIS have been designing maps – what in India we call YANTRA. A YANTRA is called a design by Sufis. You may have seen Indian yantras and you may be puzzled about what they are. Looking at a YANTRA there are only lines, geometrical designs – but if you know how to decode it, you will be surprised. It is the map of your whole journey. It shows something, but you will have to know the language. The map is in a certain language, it is not available to the public – because the public can use it in a dangerous way. It hides great power within it. It can be given only to the initiates. All world religions have created their designs, but nothing to compare with the NAQSHBANDIS.

First it has to be understood that a map is a device – arbitrary. It is neither true nor false. It is simply useful or not useful. It is a utilitarian device. It has nothing to do with truth as such. [...]
